Why do Americans focus so much on prolife and prochoice instead of education?

Public Comments

  1. Education... that is ignorant.
  2. I think you are right. I think that rather then preaching we should be teaching kids the affects of unprotected sex and personal responsibility.
  3. Because it's easier to state you position and b;tch than to actually have solutions. This problem is rampant not only in American citizens, but in Washington as well.
  4. Probably because our education system is screwed. It's been cut and cut and cut. Teachers earn meager wages to teach kids how to pass their next round of standardized tests, and that's about it.
  5. Prolife does focus on education and prevention.Main sticking point is "abortion on demand" usually for reasons of convenience only.
  6. There is no debate over education and prevention. Those are choices that that can be and are availed of every day, but they are not in direct opposition to anyone's beliefs. (except perhaps some fundamentalist ideologies)
  7. How about the parents take some responsibility too? I hear way too many parents making statements like, "I know you will do it so be careful and use protection". What a crock! How about teaching our kids about cause & effect? Of course that would have to apply to everyone in order for that to work.
  8. Because I do not want children dying just because someone had unprotected sex.
  9. Pro choice advocates have been trying to encourage education & prevention for years. But religious anti-choice cons are opposed to education. They make any number of ridiculous claims that I won't bore you with repeating. Their opposition to any kind of education about birth control is largely responsible for the rift between them and reality.
  10. Because the religious right also opposes sex education, and anyone posting here that says different (and you know who you are) is lying.
  11. Depends on what "education and prevention" you are talking about. If it means abstinence, then I would support it. Otherwise, I will never support it.
  12. Abortion is a symptom of, and a simple solution to, a more difficult problem, specifically 'education' and 'prevention'. You can't make someone act responsibly, you can't educate someone that does not want to learn. You can't force people to do the right thing. So tragically, when people screw up, the simple solution is abortion. People don't want to make the hard decisions, they don't want to deal with the difficult issues. All they want to do is have an abortion and Pop! The problem is solved. It's a sad and tragic testimate to the pervasive ignorance and the times we're living in.
  13. The most boneheaded thing I've noticed is why pro-lifers are overwhelmingly anti-condom. Condoms reduce the chance of unplanned pregnancy, which means less demand for abortions! It seems their real agenda is to eradicate fornication, which is neither feasible nor desirable IMHO.
  14. Ritch Williams should get the best answer....Well Said!!
